Under My Skin (Skinned, #1)Under My Skin by Judith Graves
My rating: 4 of 5 stars

I was recommended this YA book by Amazon way back in 2011/2 due to my reading and browsing history. I liked the synopsis and fell in love with the cover so I bought a copy. Unfortunately, due to my large reading list, I have only recently been able to read it. However, since purchasing this book, it has since been re-edited and given a new cover in 2014. I can only review the original.

Eryn McCain is a wonderful character. She is not your average teen. In fact, she's not even human. Well, okay, she's part human. Her mother is a wolven and her father is human. However, she acts just like a normal teenager at times, full of angst. The only difference is that she is exceptionally strong and fast, and hunts werewolves.

This is a fast paced roller coaster ride of action and adventure. I started this book and was quickly engrossed in the tale. I was impressed with the illustrations interspersed throughout the book, but was surprised at their inclusion. However, they gave the reader a chance to picture the characters and scenes more easily, especially if a youngster is not as proficient in reading. I don't know if the illustrations were kept after the re-edit though.

There are some interesting characters in the book: Brit, a young goth who has her own secrets. Alec Delacroix is not really a bad guy, but as Eryn has been warned away from the family, she finds herself intrigued with him. Then there is Wade, the police chief's son. He's handsome and charming, but there is something about him that made my skin crawl. When I found out what was going on with him, I felt sorry for him.

The story is intricately woven with mystery and suspense. Just when I thought I had figured out what was going on, a twist would occur and I would have to begin again. As the story progressed, I found myself cheering Eryn on whilst sitting on the edge of my seat. I reached the end of the story with sadness, as I wanted to keep reading. I am now looking forward to continuing the series with the second book, Second Skin.

Judith Graves has written a fantastic YA paranormal coming of age story. I love her fast paced writing style and the flow was wonderful. There were a few typos, but as this book was re-edited, I would like to think that most of them would have been corrected.

I highly recommend this book to young readers aged 12 and above who love stories about werewolves. I also recommend this book to adults who love reading YA paranormal romances. - Lynn Worton

Book Review of Tegen Justice (Tegens Book 2) by Inge-Lise Goss @IngeGoss

Tegen Justice (Tegens Book 2)Tegen Justice by Inge-Lise Goss
My rating: 4 of 5 stars

This is the second book in the Tegens series. I really enjoyed it!

Sara Jones is a wonderful character. When I first met her in The Tegen Cave I wanted to shake some sense into her. I felt she has grown and adjusted well into her new life as a Tegen. Now using the name of Sally Joblon, she is still determined to break up an organised crime/drug family. However, finds herself being pulled in two directions emotionally. Which will win, her head or heart?

I started this story and was hooked from the first page. It is told through the eyes of Sara/Sally and the reader is taken on a roller coaster ride of action, adventure. mystery and danger. I love the way the story unfolded. There are some interesting characters introduced. Wendy is a young Tegen, who comes across as a spoilt brat; if she doesn't get her way she throws deadly tantrums. I must admit that I didn't warm to this character. She tested not only Sara's patience, but mine too. I liked Agnes, Sara's hired Grandma, she is a kind lady. There is also another intriguing character introduced. His name is Kendall. He is a Tegen enforcer and is quite mysterious. He sent shivers down my spine. The heat between Connor and Sara is still explosive, though there is not much intimacy in this book compared to the first one.

One thing I will say about this book is that the story is wonderfully written. The characters are lifelike and the storyline gripping. I reached the end of the book, which ends with a slight cliffhanger, with mixed feelings. Now I can't wait to find out what is in store for Sara in the next book.

Inge-Lise Goss has written an intriguing horror full of mystery and suspense. I love her writing style, which is fast paced, and the flow was wonderful. I am curious to see what this author comes up with in the future.

I do not recommend this book to younger readers due to some violence and to readers who have arachnophobia or have a nervous disposition. However, I highly recommend this book if you love horror/suspense genres. - Lynn Worton

For Blizzard, the feeling of betrayal was one he knew well.

His father was a long-time member of the Brothers by Blood MC. He believed the brotherhood came first, even before his wife and child. At first Blizzard didn't even blame his mother for walking out on them. That was until he learned that she’d hooked up with a member of another MC, leaving him behind to deal with the aftermath.
He never thought he would feel that kind of pain again, swearing that his back would never again see the blade of another knife. That was until Rose came along, tempting him, drawing him in and then leaving him on the sidewalk, fighting for his life as she walked away with the enemy.

Rose had spent her whole life wondering where she’d come from.

Her mother had always kept that information to herself, taking it with her to the grave. She was determined to know her history and her father but soon found it wasn't the reunion she’d hoped for. She may have escaped the hands of a madman, but the family she’d been left with still didn't fill the void she had inside.
Rose had made many mistakes, hurting people who cared for her and destroying herself in the process. She was heading down a dark road and returning to the town where she lost herself—and her heart—was never part of the plan. When given the opportunity for redemption and with nothing left to lose she was about to throw herself back into hell. But karma against her, this time there might not be anyone coming to her rescue.

They say time heals all wounds, but time is running out. Could you forgive and forget if it meant the difference between life and death?

His voice was doing funny things to me, so I gulped down more water. I couldn’t believe we were standing in my kitchen having this conversation. “Maybe I like to call the shots with the men I date.” Quite frankly, if they didn’t like it, then too bad, I almost added.

“Yeah, and how has that worked out for you, Sasha?”

His smug look made me want to wipe it off. “I’m not into long-lasting relationships, therefore it's worked out just fine,” I retorted.

He gave a low chuckle and moved, boxing me in against the countertop. With his forearms on either side of me, he leaned in. His voice was low and gravelly as he murmured against my ear, “I was talking about the sex, honey. How was the sex?”

I wasn’t sure I wanted to discuss my sexual history, let alone admit it lacking. Meanwhile, his nearness was wreaking havoc on my senses.

He pulled back and danced his fingers down my arm. “Actually, I could tell you how it’s been for you.”

I shivered at his nearness and sexy voice. “Do tell,” I challenged on a whisper.

He smirked, knowing exactly the effect he was having on me. “It was fine. And the word fine is a throwaway word. It’s what you respond with to the doorman when he asks how your evening was: “Fine, thanks.” It’s what you say to the client when they ask how your flight was: “fine.” But it shouldn’t be the way you describe your sex life. Hell, maybe the first time was okay and promising. The second time, maybe a little bit better, but by the fifth time, you realized that’s it. That was the main act with the encore. But it was fine, so you stick it out for a while. After all, it’s nice to have a reason to wear something new and lacy with someone to notice. Nice to get dinner with someone. But then you find yourself bored and staying late at work even when you don’t have to because, frankly, the alternative isn’t as appealing, and that’s not so fine.”

“Okay, enough.” I moved one of his arms and stepped out of reach to lean against the opposite counter. He’d touched a nerve, hitting too close to home on my sex life or at least the one that I could remember.

“I only tell you this because I’ve been there, and now it’s time for something better than fine.”
