Book Review of Eville's Most Wanted (Eville Book 2) by Holand Peterson

Book Title: Eville's Most Wanted
Genre: Science Fiction/Fantasy
Pages: 284
Author: Holand Peterson
Date Published: 1 April 2012

Synopsis:

Wanted The town of Eville is in shambles. "Brilliant" inventor, Serene Necrosia, hoped to usher in a new era with her latest invention. Instead, she conjured up an army of flesh-devouring space squids, blotted out the sun and nearly brought about the end of the world. Hey, it's all in the name of progress, right? Next time things will work much better. But for now it's probably best if she hits the road before the authorities haul her off to prison (or loony bin), and find a good place to hide. Along for the ride are her cranky hunchback employee Moody and the "Othersider" Alex Hobbs, a regular man caught up in a world beyond his reckoning, and from which there is no escape. What Serene doesn't count on is the involvement of the distinguished Cyclops investigator, Daniel Hammett, and his partner Raphael Vega. These tenacious, tough-as-nails officers will stop at nothing to bring Serene and her accomplices to justice. Even worse is the fact that the Cosa Nosferatu (vampire mafia), goblin mercenaries and a mysterious assassin are all making a play for Serene as well, eager to get their hands on the woman's overwhelmingly destructive creation for their own nefarious ends. Now it's a race against time as all parties desperately fight to capture the three fugitives- and in this race there is no prize for second place. Bullets will fly, webs of deception will be spun, several goblins might croak, old friends and new enemies will enter the picture and the world shall never be the same again in... Review 6*

I received a complimentary book by the author in return for an honest review.

This is the second book in the Eville series. This has got to be the quirkiest sci-fi/fantasy adventure I have read in a long time, if ever! I absolutely LOVED it!

Alex Hobbs is a fantastic character! He is one of the good guys. I found him to be extremely levelheaded, even when the situations he faces would be enough to leave me in a mess! Although, I think he was only holding on to his sanity by a thread at one point! Unfortunately, he has found himself in a bit of a predicament. Everything that can go wrong, does so in spectacular style! Now on the run with Serene and Moody, can he survive the crack-pot calling herself his employer, or will the formidable Cyclopes detective, Daniel Hammett get to him before the vampire mafia kills them all?

Serene Necrosia is a wonderful character! To me, she is a cross between a mad scientist/inventor and Morticia from The Addams Family. She has a brilliant mind, but her experiments have a nasty habit of biting back!

There are some other very colourful characters in this book. Quasimoody (AKA Moody) is a hunchback and indentured to Serene. Then there is Josiah, the Werewolf and Marco, Serene's ex-husband, and not to forget Dante, Serene's pet tarantula. The list goes on and on! This book is full of wit and sarcasm, not to mention the gross bits that made me go "Eww!"! I absolutely loved the repartee between Moody and Alex. They have developed a wonderful friendship and made me envious. They have my utmost respect for putting up with Serene and her crackpot ideas!
I think I also fell a little for the cyclopes, Daniel Hammett. He is steadfast, honourable and determined to get his man (or woman in this case). I did feel a little sorry for his long suffering partner, Rafael Vega, at times. Although he doesn't speak (I think he's mute), I found him to be quite expressive in his own way.

This book is just as full on and exciting as the first one. I found myself completely hooked from the first page and didn't want to put it down even for toilet breaks, so guess what I did? Yup, I took it with me! (TMI I know, sorry!). The story is told mostly through the eyes of Alex, but there are other characters that have their say too. It intrigued me at how the story has developed. Although I did find it not as humorous as the first one, I still had a huge smile on my face at the characters and their antics. Serene is her usual oblivious self and plots and plans with no regard to her employees' desires or safety. The Cosa Nosferatu are vicious vampires, but Luminita is extremely dangerous assassin and a formidable foe. I can't wait to find out what happens next in the third book, The Eville Protection Plan.

Holand Peterson has a vivid imagination, and it shows in his writing. This book captured me from the first page, and has left me wanting more! I love his fast paced writing style and the flow of the story was wonderful!

I'm not sure what age range this book is aimed at, but I would highly recommend it to the older YA reader (15+), as well as adults who have a twisted sense of humour, or who love science fiction/fantasy novels with quirky characters. - Lynn Worton

About The Author:

So...who is this Holand Peterson fellow, anyway?

Word on the street is that this curious scamp makes his home in the wild, exotic realm commonly known as Boise, Idaho. He lives with his dear wife Cheri (Nefarious Queen of the Harpies!), along with an insidious menagerie of hell-beasts masquerading about as common household dogs, cats and ferrets.

When Holand is not wholly engaged in pouring out the absurd and bizarre ramblings of his imagination onto the page, he makes time for the higher, dignified pursuits of watching movies/animation/TV shows, playing video games, reading comics/graphic novels/books, and many other similar mature, refined activities befitting a man of his breeding.

Holand's works include the sci-fi/fantasy/comedy/adventure novels Eville, Eville's Most Wanted and The Eville Protection Plan, along with the whimsical "Snaggle Stories" for children.
